The Healing Power of Staying
Living in a girls’ hostel in Bangalore has taught me that friendship is more than sharing laughter, meals, and late-night conversations. Sometimes, it means quietly sitting beside someone carrying a pain we cannot take away.
A few months ago, a close friend lost her grandfather. I still remember the moment she received the news. The usual hostel noise suddenly felt distant. She sat silently, trying to process her grief, while tears filled her eyes. I wanted to help, but no words seemed enough. I could not bring her grandfather back or make her pain disappear.
For the first time, I understood what helplessness truly meant. I could not fix the situation; I could only stay. I listened when she wanted to talk and remained silent when she did not. Sometimes, we simply walked around campus together.
As a student of holistic medicine, this experience taught me that healing is not always about curing. Sometimes, it is about compassion, patience, and companionship. I learned the difference between helping and fixing. Helping means being present and walking alongside someone, while fixing assumes every problem has a solution.
Now, when friends face homesickness, stress, or personal struggles, I remember this lesson. Sometimes, the greatest gift we can offer is simply our presence. When we cannot fix the pain, we can still choose to stay.
